My body of work is entitled Sportraiture, because it focuses on the intense aspects of sports from the point of view of individuals. The aim is to capture an individual in the midst of emotional aspects of sport. These aspects range from the depression of injuries to the thrill of competition. Earlier works focused primarily on the movement and environments of the figures. In Basketblue, the sporadic use of the surreal colors helps to capture the movement of the figure. A similar style is implemented my basketball diptych. Other works such as The Gunslinger capture the emotion of an athlete and their environment. Later works were inspired by personal experiences with severe injuries that left me unable to play football the remainder of high school and at the collegiate level. The two works from my Playing with Pain series focused on the injurious side of sports and its emotional consequences using a dramatically heighted compositions with an emphasis on dark values: Sidelined and CTE. Vibrant saturated color and mixed media techniques were further utilized to heighted the visceral experience of the injuries themselves. The viewpoint of CTE puts the viewer right on the field with the player. This intimate angle draws attention to the strain on his face, and the effect is heightened by the vibrant colors in the brain.
